Hospice Visiting Volunteer
A hospice visiting volunteer plays a vital role in providing comfort, companionship, and non-medical support to patients with a life-limiting illness or those receiving end-of-life care, as well as their families. Their duties and responsibilities are centred around offering emotional, social, and practical assistance, often by visiting patients in their homes, hospice facilities, or hospitals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide companionship and emotional support; offer comforting presence, engage the client in conversation, provide emotional support for the client and family
- Caregiver relief: Stay with the client to give the caregiver a break.
- Be a compassionate listener
- Report any changes in conditions to the hospice coordinator
- Maintain the strictest standards of conduct and confidentiality regarding any information encountered while volunteering.
- Report monthly visits to the Hospice Coordinator on or before the last day of the month.
Location
CHSLC Hospice services serve the Lanark County area. Visiting can take place at clients’ homes within, but not limited to, Lanark County and in Hospitals in the same areas.

Skills and Qualifications
- Caring and Compassionate
- Good listening skills
- Able to function independently
- Non-Judgemental
- Awareness of diverse backgrounds and end-of-life customs.
- Must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check through OPP (at no cost to the volunteer)
- Complete a 36-hour Hospice Palliative Care Training Certificate (arranged by the Hospice Coordinator)
Time Commitment
- Be able to make a 1-year commitment
- up to 4 hours once or twice a week
- It is the decision of the volunteer on which client placement to accept
